How to apply

Browse courses

You can choose to apply for up to three courses. Head over to our ITT Providers page where you see a list of providers in our region and choose the suitable courses for you.

The three courses you choose can be from the same or different providers. Make a note of the training provider code and training program code as you will need these to complete your application.

Where can I apply?

All teacher training applications must be made through DfE apply

When you should I apply?

Applications usually open in October.

The application process

  1. Register with DfE apply
  2. Complete your application online. You will need the following information to complete your form:
  • Training provider codes
  • Course codes
  • Campus codes
  • Qualifications
  • School and work experience
  1. Write your personal statement

You will have up to 600 words to explain why you want to be a teacher. It is your chance to show your motivation, commitment and teaching potential. This is a crucial part of your application, so don’t rush and take your time to complete it. Draw on related examples or experiences, such as time spent in schools or other learning settings.

You can get help with your personal statement from teacher training advisers who will provide you with one-to-one support throughout the application process.

  1. References

You will need to provide contact details for two references on your form. They will not be contacted until you accept a place on the course:

  • If you are a recent graduate, then you will need an academic reference.
  • If you already work in a school, you will need a reference from your headteacher.
  • If are looking to change careers, then you will need a reference from your recent employer.

You can give a character reference, such as from a mentor or someone you know through volunteering, as a second reference.

  1. Submit the form.
  2. Attend the interview

If your application has been successful you will be invited to interview where you will have the chance to talk about why you want to become a teacher and discuss your skills and experience with the provider.

  1. After the interview, successful candidates will be offered a place on the course. If you have been unsuccessful then the provider will give with constructive feedback and discuss your options should you wish to apply again in the future.

Applicants with conditional offers may need to attend a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course to refine their subject knowledge before they start their training.

Visit the Get into teaching website to get some great tips on getting ready to apply. You can also access their teacher training advisors who will provide you with advice on everything you need to know about applying including how to prepare you for the interview.
