Appropriate Body Services (AB)

What is an Appropriate Body?

An Appropriate Body is an organisation that oversees and supports the induction of Early Career Teachers (ECTs). Its main role is to make sure:

  • Schools provide the right support and guidance during induction.
  • Each ECT follows a programme based on the ITT/ECF framework.
  • Induction meets national standards and is delivered consistently.
  • The ECT’s progress is monitored fairly.
  • A final decision is made on whether the teacher has successfully completed induction.

Without registration with an Appropriate Body, an ECT cannot begin their induction.

Why choose us as your school Appropriate Body?

With over 13 years of experience, the South Yorkshire Teaching Hub is your local Appropriate Body. We work closely with schools to make sure every new teacher gets the best possible start.

We focus on two core areas:

1. Monitoring support

  • Checking that ECTs receive all their statutory entitlements.
  • Ensuring schools follow the statutory guidance.
  • Carrying out ECF fidelity checks for the school-led route, so ECTs get the right programme of support.

2. Monitoring assessment

  • Reviewing the headteacher’s recommendations.
  • Making the final decision on whether the ECT has met the Teachers’ Standards.
