The National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are designed to support the professional development of teachers and school leaders at all levels and stages of their career who want to develop their skills and knowledge in specialist areas of teaching practice. They have been developed with teachers and leaders in mind and are based on the NPQ framework created by the DfE. Each NPQ is underpinned by the framework which sets out what participants should know and be able to do after completing the course.
Why should I study an NPQ?
NPQs are completely FREE so it won’t cost you a penny! (Terms and conditions apply, see the DfE wesbite for more information). They will equip you with the skills and knowledge to improve your teaching, expand your professional networks, help you move into a leadership role, if this is something that you are looking to achieve, they are flexible and can fit in around your work and personal life and are nationally recognised qualifications.
NPQs are an investment in your professional development with the aim to ultimately help improve the outcomes for our region’s young people.
What NPQs can I study?
There are two suites of NPQs available. The specialist suite is for teachers or leaders who would like to increase their knowledge and skills in a specialist area. The leadership suite is for anyone currently working in leadership or aspiring leaders.
How long does the course last?
Courses last between 12 and 18 months, depending on your chosen NPQ.
What will I learn?
You will learn from the evidence-based curriculum, drawing on effective pedagogy, current research, and international best practice – all of which equips you with the knowledge and skills to improve in your current role, or take the next step in your career.

Funding information for schools
There is no limit to how many scholarships a school can receive but please be mindful that NPQ participants will attend face-to-face events during term time as part of the course. However, it is worth noting that we try to ensure these are morning or afternoon sessions to support workload and capacity issues.
