Early career teachers

What support can you expect?

You’ve completed your training year and secured your first teaching post. You are now an early career teacher (ECT) who will undertake a two-year training package based on the early career framework (ECF). The framework, which builds on the core content framework (CCF) is designed to help you build the skills, knowledge, and pedagogy you need to feel confident and empowered in your classroom as you enter the profession.

Take a look at the Get into Teaching website for further details.

Benefits of the framework for ECTs

  • Ongoing support from a dedicated school-based mentor.
  • Personalised programme of study and time off for training and mentor sessions.
  • Opportunities to observe experienced teachers helping you develop your own practice.
  • Regular progress reviews and two formal assessments against the teachers’ standards
  • Different starting points throughout the year so you can start your induction at any time that is convenient for you.
  • Training delivered by a mix of online and in-person sessions by expert practitioners.
  • You develop your subject knowledge and pedagogy.
  • You build relationships with colleagues.
  • You become a key part of your school and local education community.

What will I learn?

The content of the framework includes modules on:

  • Behaviour management
  • Pedagogy
  • Curriculum
  • Assessment
  • Professional behaviours

How much does it cost?

It costs you nothing! The ECF framework is fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE).

Network

Your personal and professional support network is essential and you will find the support colleagues and mentors give invaluable. Taking advantage of opportunities to work with others, share ideas and experiences and most importantly, ask for help when you need it will be invaluable.
